I purchased my '07 2.0T SS last October...so I've had it about a year and put 16k on the ticker (mostly hwy commuting). Overall, the build seems pretty solid (I was expecting the trim to be falling off but no such problems). I have not had any mechanical problems other than an annoyance regarding the 6 sp manual shifting "notchy" when cold (dlr adjusted linkage and that helped combined w/ myself adapting a bit). I was also initially paranoid about the sound of the engine on startup but that's just the way the car sounds. Interior is nice (there are a few el cheapo things but overall better than the competition), paint is good, mileage is good, and the ACC works really well once you figure it out. I went with a minimum of extras so, in theory, there are fewer things to have problems with (base w/ heated seats) but base model still has lots of extras that other car makers have you pay extra for. For example, volvo you pay extra for the turbo and the leather seats. Seats could be better but they are adequate (AERO seats feel much more comfortable but I was unwilling to be forced to buy a 6 cyl engine in order to get comfortable seats).

SAAB has a reputation for somewhat lax quality control so I think the CR numbers are just an indication of a few percentage ticks greater probability that some things might need correction fresh out of the factory (as others have said....if you get a good one the car is great...if you are unlucky enough to get a bad one then it could be frustrating...I think the chance of getting a good one is pretty high but the asian companys appear to do a better job at quality control so the odds of getting a lemon are somewhat reduced). Volvo does not really have any reputation for reliability as far as I know and even though Honda generally does a good job my prior 88 Civic valves wore out at 125k due to a design flaw in the oiling system.

I too looked at the other cars you are looking at but it wasn't a tough decision because I wanted good gas mileage (Volvo not) and I didn't like the interiors of the Volvo or the Acura. Only time will tell if the 9-3 mechanicals have some longevity but so far it looks pretty good. I do get concerned when I hear things like you have to replace the entire fuel tank in order to change the fuel filter (if true...that is an outrageous design flaw..."fuel filter for life?"....not buying it).
