$500 isn't as bad a quote as some have mentioned on the site.

I guess you will need a micrometer to really know how much life you have on the rotors. Although I can't substantiate this, I have heard Saab rotors are relatively soft and tend to wear at a similar rate to the pads.

Parts aren't too bad (<$200) if sourced from a site sponsor (see below). If you have an independent Saab mechanic, I would think you would be quoted less than $300 labour.
If attempting DIY you will need a special tool to wind in the rear piston while compressing it - seems like people have been able to borrow a suitable tool from autozone with a deposit.
You will also need some female (E) and male torx (T) sockets and probably a breaker bar to get the caliper carrier off - sorry I don't have the specific sizes?

The procedure has been described before, but should be as follows:
1. Remove retaining spring from the caliper -> 2. Remove plastic covers and remove 2 caliper bolts, suspend caliper with piece of wire (NOT brake hose) -> 3. remove outer pad -> 4. remove caliper carrier (hard as bolts have loctite) -> 5. remove rotor/disc retaining screw -> 6. Remove rotor -> 7. clean hub surface -> 8. Fit new disc and retaining pin (torque 5 lb.ft) + clean with Brake cleaner -> 9. Clean caliper carrier surface and refit bolts with loctite 242 (torque 96 lb.ft + 45 degrees) -> 10. Remove inner pad and compress brake piston (with special tool) clockwise (also seems to be a PIA, take care of rubber gaiter) -> 11. Fit brake pads ->refit hydraulic body (torque 21 lb.ft) -> refit protective covers -> refit retaining spring. Press brake pedal a few times to press out brake pistons and to adjust the handbrake.
Good luck
