Given the comments so far I assume this is not a regular issue with SAAB keys.

I don't use lotion or cosmetics, keys typically stay in ignition when refuling and I am particularly careful about fuel on my hands as I hate the smell so it wouldn't be gas. I do keep one to two keys on the fob with the ignition key perhaps it is an abrasion issue while in my pocket.
