Running the entire car with a network of computers can complicate seemingly simple tasks. A defective remote can cause this. They act up intermittently. Accidental fluid spills into the ignition can cause this. The steering column lock module can cause this. If you poke your finger into the keyhole, the SID will usally say key not accepted, but sometimes will say steering locked etc. Apart from just jiggling the wheel in the simplest cases, reading fault codes would be required ASAP before they erase. It is not humanly possible to find these faults without fault codes. If the wiring were at fault you could replace all the parts and still have the problem for example.
I know I'm going long, but here is the sequence.
Key fob inserted, Ignition Switch Module button depressed.
ISM signals Column Integrated Module to interogate the key fob.
CIM reads key fob code from ISM and if accepted sends unlock message to ISM to let you turn the key and another unlock message to the Steering Column Lock module.
It actually gets a bit more complex from there, but it all happens very quickly. The upsides of this electrical architecture are far greater than the down. For instance, the Main Instrument Unit (guage cluster) only has 5 wires going to it. The major downside is that liquids spilled in your car will fry any module like the ignition or window switches etc.
