1st half vs 2nd half.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 10:59:06 In Reply to: Buy them used, norvin, Wed, 24 Sep 2008 13:39:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK lets say that 2004 Arc vert you bought for $20k sold for $40k new, or maybe only $35k ish at some point. So the first 4 years under warranty cost $20k depreciation. So when that same car is 8 years old and has 100k miles and is worth only $5k, and much tougher to sell than a 4 year old with only 50k miles, who really spent more?
You're happy you spent $15k on a four year old car outa' warranty. And the guy who bought the car new, or if he's really lucky leased it, spent $20k (or maybe only $15k) for a new car in warranty. I believe there's a solid case for both. Pretty similar amounts for the 1st half of the car's life vs the 2nd half.
As for the BMW resale myth you. A $45k BMW 3 Series Vert probably worth $25k after four years and 50k miles, which by my admittedly biased arithmetic is about the same amount of depreciation as the Saab or at least not dramatically different.
