I am very impressed with your trouble-shooting.
I have had the exact same symptoms on two occasions.
So, 2003 9-3SS is on its third windshield wiper motor.
Unfortunately, I am not as handy as you are; so I had to
pay my dealer (quite a bit). The first one was under warranty,
the second was not. After a lot of letters and calls, I got
GM to share the cost of the current one. I think there must
be a design issue if this failure is that common. I have never
had a wiper motor fail on any other car that I have owned.
OT: I was incredibly disappointed in my dealings with customer
service on this issue. I had to send them original invoices
(copies not good enough!). You would think they could just
contact the dealer to verify that the repairs took place.
