It's a pretty common problem, I think. My 2003 9-3 has nasty peeling but the bottom black finish is still there. I test drove a 2004 9-3 where the buttons were so worn in spots that they had turned white.
eeuro sells a replacement button set but I didn't see any for your MY.
Be really careful with cleaning products on the buttons. I've heard Armor All blamed for the peeling.
