Get a second opinion before you do anything. No reason to automatically assume the diagnosis is correct, though shouldn't assume it isn't either. Also, valves shouldn't be burnt assuming you have maintaned it, which it sounds like you have. How many miles on the car?

Donating the car seems silly...if it were a Cavalier or a Camry I'd say sure, but it's a car for an enthusiast so if you gotta, sell it to another (enthusiast) on this site or others that appeal to Saab lovers. That is just the kinda car people like me would love to get for a reasonable price, fix it myself and have a sweet car.
