It is hard to know what you are describing.
The Saab key has two distinct parts, that comprise the "key." The electronics, buttons, battery, are the fob. Inserted into the fob is a specially cut steel key. The steel key can be removed from the fob by pressing on the Saab brand symbol on the side of the fob. The key is just that, a simple piece of metal. The key is for emergency entry into the vehicle, your vehicle when the radio code from the fob does not do the trick, which could be the fob or it could be something in the car itself.
Using the metal key for entry sets off the alarm. One then uses the fob in the ignition receptical between the front seats which hopefully silences the alarm and starts the car.
So, what is you question? You have a fob. does it have a key? Is the fob which you describe programmed into the car's computer? This latter must be accomplished by a dealer or independent who has the Tech2 computer tool for Saab cars.
I bought a new fob because my old one was physically worn out, rubber falling off, button shot, etc., from too much time in my pocket with other keys, knives and change.
The new fob came without a key. The old key slides into any fob just like a sword slides into a scabbard. The new fob had to be programmed into my car's computer, which was accomplished by an indy garage which specializes in foreign cars including Saabs.
So, perhaps post a picture of what item you are talking about. There should be a pic on the seller's web site. you can get the car manual online, or at least one could. Do you know what year and model the key came from, or the fob, or whatever? We are discussing here an item that changed when the new generation 9-3 sport sedan came out, right?
