I have (once) accomplished this job without having to remove the cat. Thus saving the exhaust hardware from destruction.
I will admit it was a bit tricky to maneuver the thermo-housing and pump out, but it was possible.
I have also observed that more than half of the time the special tool required to hold water pump sprocket in place is ineffective and the chain/tensioner jump.
Another SAAB Tech told me that he has better luck if the tool is new (or slightly less used. And that after 3-4 uses they typically dont hold very well any more.
