GM had some mumbo jumbo cover up in the beginning that it might be due to high sulfur content building up oxide on the sensor and using some special fuel injection cleaner would make it work again.
Maybe that elixir had some brass finger extension capabilities but otherwise I'm not sure what it would cure.
My take on it is that they just made the fingers to thin coupled with too much pressure against the resistor board.
Saab just shock raised the price on the 06 up 9-5 fuel pump from $480.00 something to 962.00 so you were probably in luck replacing it earlier.
