It's not common for the alternator to fail at such a low mileage but of course it can happen. The pulley on the alternator is actually a type of one-way clutch and those do get noisy over time and in some cases can slip resulting in the alternator not being able to maintain speed. This type of failure would cause the battery light to come on. My 2006 9-3 has 164k and I've changed this pulley twice so far just due to the noise. I think I paid about $50 on amazon or ebay for the pulley and maybe $30 or so for the tool needed to remove and replace the pulley.
Of course a new pulley is already installed on a replacement alternator and I'm sure many people just replace the whole thing when only the pulley is worn out.
