Cause of failure Uncertain Posted by Sondeen [Email] (#796) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Sondeen) on Tue, 4 Dec 2018 20:04:14 In Reply to: Cause of failure unknown, Sondeen [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 21 Nov 2018 22:44:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have the new springs in the car. I also did new shocks (Saab OEM made by Sachs), new shock mounts, and new upper and lower rubber spring pads. The car rides significantly better, so much so that I am now considering new front struts, strut bearings, etc. to refresh the front end.
The shape of the break in the failed spring exhibits classic torsional failure. The break is in the middle of the spring, not at either end, suggesting that it was NOT road salt build-up that caused the spring to rust, weaken, and break. (Unlike the front 9-3 springs that commonly fail when the bottom corrodes). Both original shock mounts were in terrible condition, badly corroded and broken in multiple places.
