Thanks for the response.
I'm not sure that I completely understand how the stability control system works, but I thought that it compared the signal from the steering angle sensor with a signal from the yaw sensor which is located in the center of the car, to ensure that they were consistent with each other. If the signals are not consistent, then it assumes the car is rotating without the steering (front) wheels causing the rotation and the car is loosing traction at one end. It engages the ABS system and cuts back on the throttle setting to bring the signals into agreement.
The FWD cars definitely have both the YAW sensor and the CIM steering angle sensor to accomplish this.
What is confusing me is that even though the YAW sensor part number is shown for the XWD models, and the WIS shows its location as under the console in the replacement instructions, it's not to be found under the console.
I had a further development a couple of days ago where I had the stability control turned off, which I have been doing to avoid the momentary brake pulse that was occurring when it turned the stability fault message on. This time I got the brake pulse and a TCS fault light on the dash. I was only a mile or so from home and returned there and checked for DTC codes with my Tech 2 without restarting the car. It showed a U2105 00 (ESP missing on boss), CIM U1501 OF (K-1 Line CIM-ISM, OPEN), and CIM B1440 71 (ISM Internal Fault).
So I think I have a CIM module that is failing, an ISM module that is failing, or an intermittent connection to the ECM.
I did some pin/contact cleaning on the ECM and ABS modules and driving around for a while to see what symptoms return.
