When I replaced the temp sensor I tightened it as much as I thought possible. I really wanted another 1/2 turn of the sensor to better align with the electrical plug, but it was TIGHT!
Or so I thought.
Yesterday the car started gushing coolant while parked after driving. It appeared to be coming from the water pump area so my wife carefully drove it 10 miles to the local SAAB specialist early this morning, while I followed in my 9-5 with 2-1/2 gallons of coolant and heat resistant gloves for roadside topping-off if the low coolant sensor light illuminated.
Repair only required 30 minutes.
Apparently some temp sensors receive too much thread sealant during manufacturing. The sensor feels very snug after threading into the head, but it is only the thread sealant and not the crush washer which is providing the seal. A few weeks go by, the engine heat softens the thread seal which flows, and PRESTO! A gushing leak.
The Tech only needed to do a pressure test, spot the leak, tighten the temp sensor a 1/4 turn or little more, wash off the engine, re-fill the coolant, do another pressure check and test drive, then call me to say the job was completed in 30 minutes with no need for a lift.
