A quick observation about OEM dash temp gauges...
Many manufacturers "trick" the dash gauge by having it show dead center for a range of temps. This way, the gauge move from center only if temperature is quite a bit over or under the normal range.
In my old 9-5, it was possible to change the parameters (with Tech2) that makes the needle stay in the center zone.
If my memory is right, from factory the needle stayed dead center from 83C to 115C (181F to 239F). I did narrow that range by making the low and high points of the "normal" range the same, that is by stating low trigger point at 94 and high at 95. With that mod, the needle was always showing the real engine temp.
Climbing a long steep hill at WOT would make the needle climb a bit, but that was about all the change I noticed. If the thermostat is working properly, then it will keep the engine at the perfect temp unless there is a problem with air flow (like a dead fan switch).
