I've seen this more than once.
It's definitely the sender if the gauge shows empty when the tank is filled, and then at some point as you consume gas it suddenly gets "accurate", showing 1/2 or 3/4 tank when it gets there, and then perhaps goes back to zero long before you actually get to zero.
In other words, you get a good reading at some levels of fullness, but not others.
It is very tempting to replace the pump along with the sender, but if you do, I would highly recommend replacing with an OEM pump. A new aftermarket pump will likely fail before your original OEM pump, had it just been left in the tank, would have.
