Wow, closer look and my clutch pedal return spring was *entirely missing* (and the plastic seat for it was broken). I guess the previous owner had the spring fall out and hid it away rather than figure out it was a good thing to have. Spring and seat are coming from eeuro, hopefully clutch action will be back to design for the first time since I have owned the car soon! (and my cruise will work again, my spacer I added hasn't been fully adequate in this regard).
