The intermittent nature of your problem suggests ISM rather than CIM, and yes, ISM is an easy replacement. The only thing to be careful of is the delicate electrical connector that goes to the ISM, which is easy to break if you try to force it. To get it off, you have to depress a little blocker with a very small screwdriver and slide a slider over the depressed blocker. I think it's easiest to first dislodge the ISM from the center console, and then, now that you have better access to the connector, go after the connector.

I would replace, and then clean your existing ISM so you have a backup. If you try to fix the problem by cleaning the ISM, and it doesn't work, you'll never know whether the ISM was really your problem, but your cleaning job was inadequate.
