If you go to NHTSA, there's precious few reports of the DI failing in pre-03 cars. I can't find more than one or two for any particular year. This may be because few die while moving, or because the DI is classified as a consumable part. (Which it is, but how quickly consumable is the issue we face.) It may also be because the DI issue isn't as big as it looks, or maybe it's just mis-filed.
I also can't find the 16 mentioned in the article, the DB may lag quite a bit...I found the action filed under 'open investigations', but filed as 'ENGINE COOLING'. So, the filing system is rather bad. NHTSA is badly understaffed, even after the whole Firestone thing.
They list complaints as coming through NHTSA, or reported by the manufacturer. In this case, they were all through NHTSA's process.
I was also browing through reports for other makes. Kind of interesting...
'03 Acura TL was investigated for the auto transmission jumping from 2 to 5, 165 reports, 5 accidents
'03 Jetta seats heaters have burned 7 people
Seems like any car is a crapshoot today...
