99 9-3 steering column problem?

I've been painfully dealing with loose steering on my 99 9-3 4D for about 9 months (it started at 49k miles)...Many of you have offered great opinions in past posts. But now IÕm wondering if there might be a problem in my steering columnÉ

Is there anything in the column that could cause the steering wheel to feel loose? Perhaps something in the telescoping mechanism? I can move the steering column up and down slightly (ceiling to floor, not in and out), but I donÕt know if this is normal. No difference in feel if the telescoping is in or outÉ

Any suggestions? Is there anything I should check out?

The history:
5 mechanics charged me for 5 tire balancings, 5 alignment jobs, a new transmission mount, new tires, new steering pump, and a new set of slightly too stiff Bilstein shocks and struts (cha-ching!). Most recently I bought and installed an MP Performance rack clamp and brace Ð which definitely stiffened the steering feel while reducing road kickback and overall vibration (the only expense thus far that has actually paid off Ð thank you for the recommendation),

Even with the MPP clamp and brace I still have a loosey-goosey feel to the wheel. Occasionally (but not once in the past 3 months) the steering will firm up, but a few stakes of the wheel loosens it right up again.
