Dano,
My wife and I own two 2000 9-5s. Her's is a LPT and mine is an AERO. Since new, I've used Valvoline 10W30/40. Both have had engine oil and filter changes every 2000 miles. Recently I've changed to Mobil 1 Synthetic and the change interval is now 3500 miles. Overkill/wasting money, perhaps, but, neither car has had a problem with oil consumption or engine oil foaming/ milkiness. The vast majority of the oil changes I have done- the others have been performed by the dealer at prescribed SAAB service intervals. The LPT has 60,000 miles, the AERO has 80,000 miles.
Over the past 30+ years I have owned SAABs exclusively. In 1973 I purchased my first SAAB, a 99LE. In 1983 I sold it with 210,000 miles on the odometer. That car never experienced an engine problem and I always changed the oil at 2000 mile intervals. In 1983 I purchased TONFISK, a 900T which was retired with a broken transmission at 280,000 miles. Similarly, that engine never suffered from a problem and the oil change interval was again, 2000 miles. My son has our 1986 900 which is still going strong with 220,000 miles on its odometer; no engine issues and oil change intervals, 2000 miles.
I guess I've been very lucky thus far, but, I think that my "luck" with engine longevity is due to SAAB quality, regular maintenance, and to regular/frequent oil/filter changes.
Longer oil change intervals (even if they are recommended by manufacurers) as far as I am concerned is about selling cars to people who need to be convinced that they do not need to be involved/concerned with their vehicles maintenance so that they can spend more of their time doing something else. Me, I'd prefer to be involved, and thus far, my preventive maintenance program has been pretty successful.
SAAB has always manufactured distinctive automobiles; innovative, well engineered, and safe cars. Regular maintenance keeps them that way.
My best wishes to you and your SAAB!
