You're getting lots of good advice in the prior replies. IMHO it really comes down to personal taste. For a lot of us old guys who are long-time SAAB afficiandos, it is not a "real" SAAB unless it has the 2.0/2.3. Of course there is another perspective, held by many who have come over to SAAB since the introduction of the 9^5, that the V-6 is preferred, for reasons that others have ably stated. And if you go back to REAL old-timers, i.e. pre-Reagan SAAB owners, you'll hear that if it's a 4-cycle engine then it's not a real SAAB! There are many perspectives.

Of course I understand that the V-6 is a "real" SAAB in the sense that it has a SAAB-engineered top end, turbo set-up and ECU. So I do not mean to give offense when I give the historical argument for the 2.3l. As for the two traditional objections to the V-6, I do not subscribe to them. I do not believe that the Opel origin of the V-6 is a problem, and I do not believe that the problems of the GM900 V-6s have any implications for the V-6 that is in the 9^5 SE.

It really does come down to taste. Personally I love the 2.3l, and if the LPT setup were not peppy enough, it could always be chipped. The Abbott chip is a particulalry good match for the 2.3 LPT, which has a very small (thus low mass) turbo, and the Abbott gets it spinned up quite nicely. IMHO the Abbott-chipped 2.3 LPT is a very close match for the Aero in some respects, and is actually more aggressive than the Aero in first and second gears. (Do not expect long trans life with this setup, however).

In order of cost your choices are stock LPT, chipped LPT, stock SE V-6, Aero. And there's a HUGE price increment to upgrade to the Aero. In order of PERFORMANCE, I would rank them stock LPT, stock SE, chipped LPT, Aero.

For myself I would not consider the V-6. I want to hear the turbo whining and the waste gate chuffing, and only the 2.3l delivers that experience. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

Rafe
