All good and important questions, but one for you first: which do you prefer to drive?

As has been said, the 2.3 is a proven engine, easily good for a quarter million miles of bulletproof service. The automatic is (evidently) finally up to the engine's standard in quality as well.

There's no particular reason to doubt that the V6 will do well--Saab has significantly reworked this (Vauxhall-sourced) engine to meet their needs. The major technical difference is its timing belt, as compared to the 4's timing chain. Saab pays for the first belt at 60k miles, regardless of whether you're still under warranty. I keep my cars at least ten years and have complete faith in the LPT6 lasting that long. Note that there's no relation between this V6 and the NA V6 used in the NG900 and 9000, which had some major problems.

There's no question that the V6 is heavier, which seems to result in a bit more front end plow on hard cornering. The 6, as has been pointed out, has much more speed off the line (this is the performance area where I decided I couldn't live with an auto LPT4). I've also had a couple of opportunities to test my V6 against the LPT4 on the highway, and every time the V6 pulled away easily.

I'm sure that a 5-speed LPT4 would be much closer in performance, but none was available in my are at the time I bought my car.

As to operating cost, the V6 clearly uses more gas and, further, really demands high octane. In my area there was no difference in insurance rates between the two, rendering that issue moot (Volvos had strikingly lower premiums, for some reason).

Buy the car you like most to drive, there's no bad decision to be made here.
