I will no doubt concede several things to the SW over the MDX:
lower center of gravity; therefore less roll-over prone
should definitely brake better
more maneuverable; better avoidance of surprises up ahead
probably a better structural cage, but that's just conjecture
But consider these points in favor of MDX (assuming a safe and conservative driver):
AWD is better than FWD when neither has snows on
AWD is better than FWD when both have snows on
MDX about 800 lbs heavier than SW, which, net of braking give-up, is a positive in a collision
Kids ride higher in the MDX (can you imagine getting jack-knifed by a Yukon or similar where your kids' heads are at grille level?); the MDX gets them up another 6-8 inches to avoid this
MDX allows my wife to see more around her and to be seen better by those around her
I find the comments about the third row to be valid; thanks to all of you who voiced your considerate concens. To be sure the thrid row will be used only rarely. Most frequent occupants in the third row/cargo space will be dogs, luggage, strollers, etc.
I find the arguments about gas mileage to be silly. As Jeff mentioned, gas mileage is similar to V6 SE but no one complains about that car.
I like the comment that I am depleting oil reserves faster and accelerating global warming. To atone for my sins, my next car will be a hybrid. ;)
