I remember (possibly wrongly) Mike Lynch referring to some cars as 'sale proof'. I believe that some cars, if they hang around too long, lose their incentives.
Last fall I was looking at 9-5 wagons, and one dealer had a nice '03 Linear with a few packages. The '03 had some stuff standard that was a package on the '04 Linear, and the '03 had some stuff that the '04 didn't, like fog lights and heated rear seat. The '03 also came with just over 8K miles.
With loyalty and incentives, I could have gotten an '04 linear wagon with comfort package and automatic for a hair over $28K. Call it 28.4K. The '03 wagon had a few more options, nothing major. But it had 8K miles. And the dealer was telling me it was 32.5K. Yikes! $4K for fog lights and a heated rear seat? Of course, somebody had already gone through the effort to break it in, so that's a plus. Now I knew why that car was still on the lot.
