There is no difference in power between '01 "base" 9-5 and '02 "Linear." Nor is there a difference in the manual transmission. The automatic was updated substantially, the Aero has a bit more power, but more to the point the '02 Aero transmission allows for full engine torque. The '02 Aero seats are substantially improved, but then you aren't looking at an Aero. Stability Control (aka ESP) is available from '02 on (standard in some versions, optional in others), Aero and V-6 get ventilated rear brakes in '02, the bumper/grille are a little different, and Xenon gas electric arc discharge headlights became available in '02. And the suspension was tightened up a bit.
In all, if you are looking for a manual shift, base (aka linear) model, there is precious little to be gained by purchasing 2002 versus 2001.
In my experience, you can improve the handling a great deal simply by installing 225-50-16 performance tires on your existing rims. It saves the expense of new rims and it preserves more of the smooth ride as compared with switching to a 17" option.
