A supercharger is also refered to as a scavenger. It is usually belt driven right off of the crankshaft, which means it steals power from the crankshaft to create higher pressure in the intake manifold. Thus, it is not the most efficient means of increasing power (or fuel efficiency for that manner) but it does bolt on to an engine very easily, which is why you see a lot of them in the aftermarket.
Except for the increased back pressure in the exhaust system (and increased fuel that comes along with the extra intake charge in the intake manifold when you mash the throttle) turbocharing is indeed free, in that it doesn't rob power at the crankshaft to create higher intake pressure, it converts the kinetic energy associate with the exhaust gas into intake pressure.
I hope this helps.
