There are at least two motors that control, via a linkage, RH and LH flaps that open and close around the heater box - a box that encloses the heater core where hot coolant is circulating. When the ACC is cooling you, the heater box flaps close. There is another motor (on the NG900 anyway) that operates, again via a linkage, flaps that open and close different routes for the cooled or heated air: windshield, panel vents and floor, or a combination of them.
You may need to remove the trim panels on the inside of both footwells and watch things move when you hit AUTO+OFF to get an idea what is happening. If something is moving on the driver's side and the corresponding mechanism isn't moving on the passenger's side, you may have a clue.
HTH and good luck.
/Geoff
