The mechanic listened to my chains today and sure enough they are louder than they should be. No immediate need to replace but certainly an item on the list. I'm going to run the car on liquid natural gas so the head will have to be refurbished anyway and I can replace the chains at that point in time.
He also explained how they do it without removing the engine: they make room by freeing the engine from the mounts and shifting it over to the side. The engine needs to be hoisted a bit for that but that is a lot easier for the home mechanic than dropping it from under the car. Everything that prevents the engine from moving to the right (when standing in front of the car) has to be disconnected.
