Yeah, NASA has only managed to crash 2 out of 5 ships Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Fri, 27 May 2005 22:11:13 In Reply to: Wasting Oil, Saaaaaaab, Thu, 26 May 2005 18:13:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That's a pretty bad track record.
I don't know why NASA is seen as such a gold standard for quality. Granted they do amazing things up there but it also comes to light about hasty decisions and politics overruling common sense and warnings from the know how people inside.
It is so much more involved than just "is the oil good enough for 10-15K miles of driving"
If the engine runs out of oil during that time, nothing is going to help your engine.
Most regular people on this board is probably never going to run low on oil and most regular people on this board is probably never going to have a sludge problem but most regular people on this board is just a very small click of the whole group that owns a Saabs.
A big group of car owners just drive their cars without thinking twice about oil levels, oil quality or change intervals, and some people listens blindly to the car maker and sales person and after 16K miles and 2 oil changes the engine is almost ruined due to sludge.
We cannot forget about time too, not only miles.
If someone drives 10K miles in 6 month, they can most likely go 10K between changes if they keep track of the oil burning rate of their own car and use a good quality oil and filter. But if someone only drives 10K in a year it is a good idea to have the oil changed every 6 month.
It is not only about the oil but the rest of the car.
Getting a check up of the car every 6 month helps you keep track of other things that might be a problem if not handled early on.
Also keep in mind that car makers don't neccesarily have the longest lifespan out of each car in mind when setting service intervals. It is a mishmash of satisfying stock owners, EPA and at the same time show nice low figures in how inexpensive this car is to own for the life of it.
A car makers view on "lifespan" might not even be close to what a Saab is capable of if serviced properly.
