I think it is more a time in service (hours at temperature) because of the degradation of the winding coatings and other polymer components... but I can't prove it, just believe it because of my familiarity with materials science principles.
I took out my running DIC at 94000km, and put in my new spare instead. I also did get a software update recently, although I am not sure exactly what it did that would benefit me! I agree it may have to do with warning codes.
I did notice that the car is slightly peppier with the new DIC - and I don't know why. I have the one that I know works as my spare in case the new one has any problems. And I sleep well at night too, even with twin 15 month-old boys!
