We have owned three 9000s and am on our second leased 9-5. Each of these cars has blown the serpentine belt, and each well within the recommended change interval. Our last car, a 2001 9-5 wagon, blew the belt with only 37K on it. The most recent case was due to a pulley. In another case it was an idler. In the other two 9000s, the casting mounting the idler to the block just fractured and dropped off.
The initial 15K service is coming up on our '04 9-5 Arc wagon, and we will be leaving almost immediately on an extensive drive to the west. To me, the history of this problem reflects the inability or unwillingness of SAAB to redesign what is obviously a defective system I am thinking of insisting that the dealer be proactive in not only visually inspecting the belt, but also the idler and pulleys in the belt path, to the extent of disassembling and reassembling the whole belt system if that is necessary to ensure that there is not some part already failing.
Any thoughts, advice, or personal experience are welcome.
