I'm not sure of the official service interval for the serpentine belt (I think it's 60K), but on my 9000's, I replace mine every 30K or so. With the belt off, I inspect the pulleys. I replace the idler and tensioner pulley at the 60K interval along with the belt, need it or not. That's because I feel that the pulleys are good for more than 60K, but I don't trust them to make it to 90K.

For the cost of the belt, if I ever take it off, I put a new one on. That's unless the belt is less than a year old and I'm in there for some other activity.

You've obviously had bad luck with belts and pulleys. I don't know the mileage when your belts failed. Now, you can assume it was just bad luck, and you'll be luckier in the future. Or, you can assume that sometime in the past you pissed off Rodknock, the God of Belts, and you will continue to be unlucky. To be same, I'd assume the worst.

I recommend replacing the serpentine belt at 30K, with a pulley inspection at that time. No big deal, give them a spin and make sure the bearings are fine. Replace the idler and tensione pulley at 60K along with the belt. Every month or so, open the hood and watch the belt while the engine runs. It should run straight and true, in the middle of the tensioner pulley. If it's running to the side, get it fixed. Also, watch the tensioner pulley movement - it is normal to 'jiggle' a little - about 1/8 inch or less. It shouldn't wobble around too much. Watch it as the A/C kicks in and out - the pulley will move to a new location as the load kics in/out. It should move quickly and smoothly to the new location, and resume the jiggle there. It shouldn't overshoot or oscillate. That's a sign that the tensioner damper is bad.

Replacing the belt every 30K, and belt and pulleys every 60K can be a bit pricey at the dealer. Mail order prices for belts and pulleys are much, much (much!) less than dealer prices. I can easily get away with this service interval because I buy the parts mail order and do the work myself. If this is something you'd rather not tackle, find yourself an independent shop that works on Saabs, and see if they will do the work for less than the dealer. Always nice to find a trusty independent, and this is a task you can 'try them out on.'

I haven't found the belt/pulley to be that unreliable. 60K for somethat like that isn't unreasonable. That lines up with what I think the offical belt interval is. Then again, the oil service interval is what, 10K? But I'd go for 30K on the belt.
