Thats a term mostly from the past. With today's paint shops and techniques, when you paint a trunk lid, they will also prep your rear quarter areas on both sides and spray the color coat that goes on your trunk lid on a part of those rear quarters to make the color blend in. after that, the entire trunk lid and both complete rear quarters get clear coated. all the while, the rest of your car is enclosed in a paint proof bag, which prevents overspray from reaching the rest of the car. Mostly EPA mandated.
If you can find a perfect trunk in your color, and your shop can install and align it properly, go for it. If not,a good quality body shop can do this type of job properly. Good luck
