But I suspect all the problems you experienced after going to the short belt option were caused by either; the failing water pump, or a slightly too long short belt (others have had this happen too).
The only accessory which sees less pulley wrap (and therefore less power transmission capability) with the short belt is the P-S Pump. No change to the A-C Compressor's drive with this option, but a slightly too long belt would cause all the problems you stated (less the failing water pump).
