I took my car in 2 months after buying it (4 years old) because of a noisy chain. Saab authorized the repair for the chains. When they opened the engine they found some sludge and so I got a new engine block. I had to pay a small portion (new engine oil and a couple of hours the shop needed that Saab wouldn't reimburse). I'm in the Netherlands so they are honouring the 8 year warranty here for sure. I saw another person on a dutch Saab forum that mentioned that he got a new engine.
They are not notifying owners in the Netherlands about sludge, synthetic oil nor shortened service intervals. They might rely on the dealers for that. The owners that never go to the dealer are out of warranty here anyway.
The interesting fact is that they actually installed the old type engine, without the hole for the new cranckcase ventilation. I think Saab is nuts to do that if they think that the new PCV fixed the problem. Now I might be back in four years needing a new engine again. Is the cost of a new valve cover, oil trap and some hoses too much? Or is the new post 2003 PCV not solving the problem?
I checked the valve area for sludge right after I bought the car and I found none but they showed me the crank case and you could wipe some carbon deposits from the corners. Good enough for an almost free replacement.
