No it was no significant changes to the engine design in 04 but Saab went to a 15,000! mile interval between oil changes in the 9-5. That's why they stepped up the lowest requirement in oil quality.
No, it's no harm in using M1 0W-40 in a 2002. It will cost more for each oil chnage so you need to figure out if it is worth it for your type of driving.
