Today I called OnStar. I'm trying to decide if I should get a new 2006 9-5 or a Certified Aero. I'm one of the (few?) OnStar fans, so this is an important feature for me, which I use all the time.

Obviously, the current cars we all have are only analog -and to function, per new federal rules mandating digital only systems, our cars OnStar telematics will be non-functional, unless there is a digital update.

What the OnStar 'analog to digital' specialist (who sounded rather uninformed) is that the 9-5 is not currently on a list for update-able systems. A letter will be sent out by December 31, giving us the result of their decision, as to whether or not this system will be convertible to digital. As it stands now, I guess there is already a list of cars they are updating, so I don't really understand why this would imply that some cars wouldn't 'make the list'.

SO... unless GM is as insane as I often think they are, they may just say goodbye to all subscribers to this system, after 2007. I can't believe this is the case, but it's what the OnStar specialist said. 'Yup, we would not be able to help you. OnStar would no longer be funtional in your car."

Anyone got better information than this person?
