The 2006 9-5 OnStar option is $699 and should be a generation 6 digital OnStar. New lower pricing for 2006 makes ordering the Saab of your dreams easier as you remove the "what if" on the incentives. I say "order" because I don't think you'll see any Saab dealers ordering any OnStar equipped cars for stock, special order only. I can see where a 9-5 Saab might not be a high priority to receive an OnStar update, not a popular thing with 9-5 owners, low renewal rate. I would imagine that the OnStar unit in older 9-5s is a pretty generic unit and with a healthy pre-paid service commitment, OnStar will possibly upgrade it to digital.
By the time OnStar gets it's act together you'll be able to purchase a GPS enabled cell phone, likely for somewhat less than the price of OnStar for the equipment as well as the service.
May I interest you in a BMW with BMW Assist? Under the right circumstances I can appreciate your reluctance to select a vehicle without telematics.
