Adam--
I don't understand why you are taking this so personally--we're talking about a car here--it's not as if I've insulted your mother.
The people who post here are typically of the "in love with their cars" variety. Some of us have frustrations (like the fact that nearly every major component of my car has been replaced), but we generally love our cars. Johnny Lease-A-9-5, who drives a majority of these cars, doesn't care about his gas mileage or the fact that there's a collection of anal-retentive (me included) owners online who have lengthy discussions about the best type of oil for their cars. We will never hear from these people and hence will never know what kind of mpg they get in the city.
All I'm trying to say is that the data here on the board is hardly reliable. Because several people report 20+ mpg in the city does not mean that 20+ mpg for 100% city driving is the norm no more than people like me reporting 14mpg in the city should be considered the norm. What i hoped to do was to bring out a few more of the 15 mpg folks to see if it happened to other people. Apparently it does. Personally, i don't think that 20+ mpg in the 175/185 hp 2.3 lpt is attainable for (100%) city driving without serious driving habit modification.
As for me, i drive nearly exclusively in the city, normally ~5 miles a day. For the most part, i use my car to get to the L in Oak Park. Sometimes I have to wait on a train. Sometimes i pass people on the right at a stop light or stop sign. There's a stop light every 4 blocks and a stop sign 1/2 way between every light (those of you who live in chicago should recognize the pattern). I never leave the sport mode on, but use it in bursts when i need the extra acceleration. Bear in mind that, like others, even though i get low city mpg, I do tend to get 30-35 mpg at very fast highway speeds. I find that once i get going, it's very fuel efficient, even if i stomp on it to pass.
Like I've said several times, I really am not too concerned about my mpg. When you look at my driving habits, the 14-16 makes sense given the short trips, etc. The car has always been dealer serviced, and most of the guys who work in the service dept drive early model 9-5's and report the same type of mpg as i do. However, i want to make sure that someone who comes to the board looking for purchasing advice gets an honest take on the mpg situation, and should know that it is probably unreasonable to expect 68mpg in the city from a 2000 SE lpt.
