After my first post in this regard on Nov. 20 Coolknight suggested the tyres might be to blame. But after changing to winter tyres the problem continued.
My SAAB garage took the transmission apart and identified the broken bit: a fork-shaped thing attached to the 2nd gear (and, in fact, the 1st gear - despite the fact that there was no noise in 1st) if I understood the mechanic's Luxembourgish French right. I believe the English term would be the transmission shift fork ... anyway, they said that they had never seen a problem like this before on any other 9-5 - or any other SAAB for that matter!
As I stated in my first post, a colleague of mine (I left the car at his house to avoid the vandals that have been plaguing my own neighbourhood lately ...) had taken the car to work one day while I was away and says he knows nothing of this. Well, I know that he tends to drive his S8 rather fast and the M5 he had previously needed a new engine after just seven years ... and he could be BS'ing me about not knowing anything ... BUT it still seems strange to me that the transmission has problems after just 10,000 miles - even if it has been driven hard for a few miles! I have certainly taken care to break it in properly and always treat the transmission gently. And I know roughly what the mileage was before and after my colleague was in charge of the car - so he would have driven it for max. 50 miles (probably much less).
I hope this is not the beginning of the end ... until now my Aero has been faultless. I'm picking the car up tonight and I'll keep you all posted!
Regards,
Caspar
