For the past week or two I have noticed a problem with the engine cranking slow while starting. It didn't seem to require a longer crnaking period, it just sounded as if the starter was not turning at full RPM's. No other warning lights on the dash or other symptom. The problems seemed to be worse when the car was warm, but it didn't happen with every start either.
I had the day off from work today so I decided to look into it (the car almost left me stranded at the bank this a.m.) I planned to tighten the starter connections but took a look at the battery first. The positive battery terminal was heavily corroded so I removed both connections to clean the positive and negative terminals. While unbolting the positive cable I noticed the post was slightly loose in the case, not a good sign.
I cleaned both terminals, bolted things back together, and tried to start the car. Click, click, click, click,...... Now it won't turn over at all. This battery is an Interstate installed 3-1/2 years ago after the OEM battery died in the parking lot of a coffee shop on the way to work. Maybe Saab positions the battery just too close to underhood heat sources, typically I get 5 years of life from a "maintenance free" battery.
Now I am sitting here, waiting for my wife to get home from work, so I can borrow her van to purchase a new battery at a local parts discount store. They have two in stock, surprise, for $79.99. Made by Johnson Controls, manufacturer of Interstate, Die-Hard and a host of other brands. Oh well, at least it happened in a convenient place this time.
