I have the problem with - 2000 9-5 Aero- and have just been told after three times at the dealer (first-can't reproduce, 2nd- just ignored it and fixed the 8 other things) that Saab will be replacing the entire tranny, probably with a rebuilt unit under the CPO warranty. That warranty was the best thing I ever did. I think I've had over $5k in repairs done. Hard to decide if I'll keep the car next August once the warranty expires. I love the way it drives but expect far better reliability.
I bought it with 28k miles. It already had a 2nd gear synchro replaced, then I had the reverse engagement lever bend so it just wouldn't go in reverse, then the tranny was out again because there was a leaky gasket from the repair. I'm hoping the new tranny works out better. I don't care what people say, if the car isn't moving you shouldn't need to do any 2nd to reverse, 4th to reverse, 3 second pause in neutral BS. If you do a three point turn you should be able to stop, put it in reverse, stop and put it back in first as quickly as you can select the gears. The only time I've ever had trouble in other cars was if the car was still rolling forward.
Good luck.
