As a rule of thumb.
Always make it a habit to gently go into first gear first and then over to reverse without lifting the foot and clutch pedal. This will slow down the transmission to a stop before entering reverse.

Most manual transmission on most cars doesn't have the reverse gear synchronized like the forward gears are.

And if by doing this manouver you still can't get it into reverse, put it neutral, lift the foot, press down the clutch again and go into first and then reverse. This spins up the transmission again and let the gears stop in another position allowing the teeth inside transmission to mesh.

This is second nature for me, and have been ever since I learned how to drive.

I beleive many shifting complaints is due to that the driver is too eager to get the tranny into the next gear and force the synchromesh to work overtime.
By giving it a little bit of time and kind of work it slowly, the shifting is a lot smoother.

If a customer comes in with a shifting complaint I always go for a test drive with them letting the customer drive the car. This way I get a chance to see how they operate the stick and clutch pedal.
This is very helpful information to see if it is a real mechanical problem or an operator error.
I know, it can be a touchy subject telling a customer that they need to work on their shifting technique instead of having the car repaired, but never the less, if nothing is wrong with the car how could we fix it?
