I have a 2000 9-5 2.3l 4 which has plenty of power for me. Have a friend with a '99 9-5 6 which is nearing 120K with no engine problems - even original water pump. He is due for his second timing belt change - $1000 a SAAB specialist garage in R.I. I think the 9-5 6 cyl. is more durable than the previous NG900 and 9000 6 cyl. engines.
My personal choice would be the 4 for economy, ess moving parts and better chain driven timing for less maint. Beware the poorly maintained engine though since sludge build up from lack of sufficient oil changes will ruin your day. If you can't get documentation of regular changes - move on to look at the next 9-5. Its not worth gambling...
