I love this car above eighty.
At 5PM I decided to head out to the Poconos (PA) via route 80; some 110 miles each way. As we were packing up it started to snow these big, wet and heavy flakes with soon covered local roads with a one inch thick coating of slush. I stopped by the gas statition to check air pressure and top off the tank. The snowy weather made switching lanes and getting out of premade tire grooves caused significant instability and driving the firt fifty miles was a pain in the behind. Still, in typical fashion I stayed on the left lane with front/rear fogs on and flew by the congestion to my right. The cat felt confident when not forced to cross 1" slush at speeds. My land rocket is fitted with Avon 550's.
Further west the slush turned to rain and the roads were safer for higher speeds. The car stayed sure footed and I knocked out exits, at nine mile intervals through deep forests, one by one. The Xenons were great, the spread and cutoff is superb; every now and then for kicks I hold the light stalk towards me and turn the headlight switch off (this activates the old school halogen headlights) to see the difference; amazing.
The party was great and the Avon 550's handled well in the snow, but when the ABS activates you better want to steer around obstacles beacuse you're not stopping for a while. :) The party was alright and the Moet&Chandon was crisp, light and went down with a peach aftertaste; still nothing to write home about.
At 1:30 AM I set out to do it all in reverse. The Valentine One stayed silent throughout but the roads were DESOLATE on the way back. No vehicles, deer or police officers for a hundred miles; did they all call out sick? I thought the roadways would be littered with chekpoints and speed traps.
With the roads now clear and dried I mounted the left lane and let er rip! for the first thirty miles through the forest I did not pass a single vehicle on this major east/west six/eight lane artery. The car feels wonderful in triple digit speeds! My girlfriend feels so confident she dosed off in the front seat, the nose does not dive forward when brakes are applied at high speeds.
I love to fly by night with the spedomoeter dimly lit in the cabin and the sole the icy blue glare of two HID headlamps slicing through the night. I kept it in triple digits through the forest for thirty miles or so and above eighty five for the remainder of the trip. I slowed as I entered the tristate area because the roads can be very punishing on my seventeen's. I got home at 3AM and noticed that the car was (obviously) covered with salt. I mean, the crud was caked onto the front fender with such force that the salt streaks entered every seam and crack in the body. I am going to reward the beast with a nice hand wash tomorrow morning. I have AIO/SG and three layers of Collinite so I'm not sweating the salt.
This is the place to rant about the 9-5 right? Just wanted to say my Aero, EATS, asphalt at triple digit speeds. I've driven a 9-5 SE on the autobahn at blinding speeds and can only with I had my Aero to enjoy my driving experience to the fullest. It's safe, firm, planted, chock full of technological advancements which I did not have on lesser vehicles and just feels so effin' right on the left lane.
Any other New Year's Eve runs to share?
Keep on Saabin!
