When we bought our '01 9-5 wagon as a used car we checked the Saab warranty repair history and were pleased to find only a few repairs during the first 36K while the car was on a lease. The car was covered by the Saab warranty for about 9 months after we bought the car and we considered this good "insurance." As it turned out, in the next nine months the warranty covered suspension bushings, a turbo, direct ignition, battery, alternator, various bulbs, SID, and the hood badge (common repair item). When the warranty was almost gone we bought an extended warranty to cover the car to 100K. With 69K on the car now the warranty has paid for a serpentine belt tensioner, front wheel bearings and some more suspension bushings. I have no doubt that we'll recover the cost of the extended warranty in the next 30K.

Having said this, do I consider the car to be unreliable? No. We take very good care of our cars and as a result we spend money to repair them while other people might let things go until the car won't run anymore or they trade it. We keep a car until 175K or more and I have no doubt that the 9-5 will do this fine.

But, you have to understand that Saabs are not Toyotas or Hondas. They are comfortable cars that are fun to drive but you have to plan on spending $1000 or more to maintain them each year. Some years you spend more, some years you spend less.

If you buy the 2002, have an experienced Saab tech go over the car completely (preferably a dealer who can repair items under warranty). Then if you buy the car plan on buying an extended warranty and enjoy!
