Well it is good that your engine is clean inside, so your driving profile, maintenance and climate are working well. But this is not true for everyone. Some have had good oil maintenance and still had sludge. So we do not know all of the answers. But we do know that full synthetics resist oxidation and oxidation is one of the key processes in polymerization of oil into a space age plastic we call sludge aka varnish.
But beyond all of that, we know that full synthetics are better lubricants from a friction and wear point of view. And synthetics resist coking in the top compression rings.
We can all make informed decisions. Saab's informed decision was to include semi synthetic in its free maintenance. Was there such a plan in 2000? Many will agree that the 10K on semi and 15K on full synthetic are quite dumb. So maybe there was a lack or wisdom in Saabs specing of semi, or was is just cost avoidance? If Saab knew everything we would not have head bolts that were not tightened, spec'd weaker and then revised again when the original was great, the oil pump design that is now in use shows some indication of advanced wear compared to the old one. I will not talk about the dumb things they did with the NG900.
So Saab engineers are fallible. Engines sludge and pistons break. For many, what Saab says is not good enough, and over kill with oil quality seems to provide some comfort. Other than that, the M1 full synthetics can save enough fuel to offset the higher costs. And is seems the cost of M1 is going up as a result of the cost of natural gas feed stocks. But the cost of NG has declined greatly in the last few weeks, so that story is not over.
Your Saab is doing well. Full synthetic is the only thing that we know of, other than timely changes, that will keep the sludge demons away. Does everyone need it to avoid sludge, no.
