Just a note - the horsepower ratings are "officially" different on these two years, but the engine is the same. Saab changed the way they calculated total hp in 2002. So there is no difference in power between the two Aeros.
Before I bought my 2001 Aero (5-speed) last year, I was in the same sort of decision-making situation. I decided that the CPO warranty from Saab was the right choice, and bought a CPO'd vehicle with 27K. No real problems in the first year of my ownership - interior and exterior bulbs, a trunk wiring harness, and a new battery (the latter not covered under warranty.)
Make sure you have a look at Saab's internal warranty service records for any used Saab in which you might be interested. All you need is the VIN and someone at the local dealership's service dept. to pull the report for you. The "Iris" report will show you what's been done to the care under warranty and where it's been done. All important: scheduled oil changes documented correctly.
